Shopping the Basement for Forgotten Treasures

Fall is slowly taking over at my house. It still feels like summer, looks like summer and actually is summer...but, I was ready for a change. Besides, my husband was home to carry the boxes up and down the stairs...good enough reason for me to get busy! I remembered an antique wooden bowl that my mother-in-law had given me many years ago. I used it for several years, but when I started using more contemporary accessories in my house, I put it somewhere and my husband found it. See why I've kept him around so long?

Known as Flemish Art, it was part of a large collection of the primitive wood-burning items that she collected for many years. It was on her kitchen table for many years. I oiled it with the oil I use on my cutting boards and it brought back to a rich color.

I decided it was time to put it back on my table for a little while.
My table did look like this:

Now it looks like this:

Doesn't that wooden bowl just scream, "fill me with apples"?

Our area orchard has the first apples of the season...they are delicious. The man at the orchard told me to take the apples home and put them in a plastic bag with a tablespoon of water and put them in the frig to make them last longer. Of course they don't last long around here anyway.

I should dig out our old wooden bowl...where ever it is. Yours is beautiful.

It's apple picking time at Eckert's. I need to plan a little day trip.

Someone's hands spent hours creating that lovely thing. Imagine how pleased they'd be to know that, so many years later, it's still treasured, & being shared with people from all parts of the world.

Sue-I have been dying to have an antique wooden bowl. The ones I have seen are very expensive so I don't have one yet! I'm glad you got that out of the basement. It's perfect with apples for fall decorating!

Sue, I love that wooden bowl and isn't it great to come across a forgotten piece. Love your new fall arrangement and can't wait to start working on some at my house. On our way home now and I am catching up on some blog reading.

That is a beautiful bowl and you have done it proud.
That is interesting about the apples. We pick apples nearby, you can hear the waves from the ocean as you pick. It has become soooo expensive! Last year it was 29.00 a bag, I am afraid to see what it this year!
I walked down to the beach today, I can't get myself fallish yet!

You are right, the bowl is perfect for apples. Your vignette is pretty, I love all the deep colors. And thanks for the tips on the apples...one day my daughter loves them, the next day she doesn't!

Happy TT Tuesday! :-)

What a wonderful wooden bowl- what I would give to own one! It looks so autumn-like filled with your apples, but it would even look beautiful on its own, too.

I have friends in your situation...the kids show no interest in assuming the job of caretaker...good steward of the treasures with which God has blessed our family. I have friends who say that they are going to leave the things to me. I tell them that I'll take them, but if at any point, the children want to use them, I'll return them to the family. Maybe you have a good friend who would be a caregiver for your things like that. Cherry Kay

Hi Sue!
Wow... what a transformation!
love the autumn look of it all!
Sue, another thing I'm really liking on your table are the candle sticks... Can you tell me where you got them? My dining table where we're eating now with Dad doesn't have any overhead lighting. I have a Yankee candle on a silver little pedestal thingy but it's not nearly enough.

Hope your week is going well ~
Enjoy the archeological digging in the basement ;o)

We brought home a bunch of apples from our co-op today too, and when we were doing the pickup the girls had tons of fun running around the orchard. I hate that fall is here, but I am in the mood to decorate.
