The Ultimate Before and After

It was a busy weekend for us. Thankfully, it is over and we no longer have to start every sentence with "after the auction"! It was also a "full circle" event for us. Our fathers worked for the same company for decades. At some point back in the early 70's, they (who lived in different towns) decided to have a yearly auction together. My husband and I got to know each other at these yearly sales and one year after the auction we started dating. The auctioneer at our father's auctions was Bill Huber, his son Rudy Huber was the auctioneer for us on Saturday.

The auction was a success. It was harder for my sister-in-law than I think she expected. My husband actually did well at the auction, his sadness and stress came in the days before. On the way home his comment was that it was difficult to think of all of the things that had always been in his parent's home, scattered all over the country. We had people there from Texas, Arizona and who knows where else. We also learned that an auction is all about teamwork. The Huber Auction Team did a great job for us. Not only did we have them do the auction, we also had them sort, wash, pack, move and do the set up. It increased our expenses by quite a bit to do so, but there was no way that my husband and his sister could have done it. Lee, from the Huber team took such care with the items and made sure to pull out things he found that he thought the "kids" might want. He earned every penny. Our only "sticker shock" was the cost of advertising. Wow...it is expensive to list auctions in the newspapers! However, without advertising you don't get your crowd.

The really good news is that my in-law's house also sold at the auction. While they didn't get quite what they had hoped to get, they decided to take the offer. They are both so busy and so tired. They are ready to be done with this part of losing their parents.

We were so blessed that my in-law's church allowed us to have the auction there. It was a very hot day, but we had seating, air-conditioning, large restrooms and the wonderful ladies of the Savoy Methodist Church serving a wonderful lunch. The people of the church have been so wonderful to all of us. I wish I lived closer, I would be attending that church.

Magazines anyone? They actually all sold to one buyer!

Schoenhut Toys...valuable!

Beautiful antique furniture...doesn't sell very well these days.
The large secretaries and cabinets were the deals of the day.
These pieces would have brought so much more back
in the days we used to attend auctions.

My father-in-law had already sold about 50 peddle cars
earlier this year. He was addicted to them.

Rudy and Linda Huber...working hard and having some fun.

We kept adding chairs, we had a great crowd.

The after...cleaning up, the last items being
picked up and everyone exhausted.

A Touch of White

You may have noticed this china tray in my post about my kitchen redo. I didn't take a close photo of it for that post, as I wanted to share some of my bargains with you today. I knew that I was on a search for some additional white items when I ordered the dark granite countertop. I could picture the white against the dark even before it was installed. I found the white tray/platter at TJ Maxx for $10. It is marked Destinos, S.A., Made in Portugal. I originally thought it would fit above my cabinets, but it was too wide.

I also found the set of three white bowls (Certified International) and the milk pitcher (THL) at TJ Maxx. The bowls were only $3 (they weren't priced and I know the checkout manager made a mistake when he priced them so low). I thought the little pitcher was just the right size to keep near my coffee pot.

The Starbucks canister I've had for several years. I had been keeping it in a cabinet, but it worked out well on my "coffee tray". Of course a fresh daffodil and a candle along with my dragonfly matches turn a simple tray into a "trayscape"!

I love the look of having pretty things sitting on my countertop, but they are generally things I use often. I also like to add pops of color mixed in with the white. I keep a few favorite cookbooks within reach and I love changing the displayed book according to the season.

The Kitchen Redo Unveiled

I should have taken more "before pictures". In fact, this was the only picture I could find that had my kitchen with the white appliances. Hopefully, my sister and brother-in-law won't mind me sharing her 50th birthday picture. Please note that we were having a party and the kitchen had more clutter than normal. But, at least you can see the beige Formica and white appliances that I've lived with for almost 8 years.

We also had a low bar attached to the counter that we never liked the looks of. It was nice for placing food when we had a houseful of people, but other than that it was an eyesore.

Our first step was actually getting stainless appliances in December. We shopped the Black Friday sales and got an excellent price for our refrigerator, which I love. I have always had side by side refrigerators and I don't miss that style one bit. We are happy with the tile floor and other than having the carpet people steam clean it when they do our carpet tomorrow, we made no changes to the flooring. As you can see, we removed the low bar and the countertop, sink and faucet. We also put a fresh coat of paint on the walls. We actually kept them the same color, we still liked it and couldn't find anything we liked more.

This is how it looks now! Bead board on the bar, stained to match the cabinets (thank you Kim @ Savvy Southern Style for the idea of staining it rather than painting it). The countertop is now a foot wider, creating a bar area and more workspace for me. We found the bar stools yesterday at Sam's. We still need to pick out tile for the backsplash and add some baseboard to the bar and some under the counter lighting.

The undermount sink is deeper than my old one. I stuck with a stainless sink because they don't stain. The faucet has been replaced. I agonized over this decision. I was torn between wanting a very tall faucet, or one that was just slightly curved. I didn't want the pull out sprayer...just my personal preference. So, we opted for one that was somewhere in the middle.

We talked about putting wooden shutters or blinds at the window, but decided that I'm too messy at the sink and that I am constantly cleaning the window. So, I found a valance that was muted tones of the colors I wanted.

It is difficult to take a picture of the granite. Ignore the reflection of light and you may be able to see that it has several colors in it. It appears almost black, but actually is a very dark green with hints of sea glass aqua, a sparkling taupe and black. The color is called Verde Butterfly. One thing I learned in this process of buying granite is that you must see the entire slab that you are buying. When you look at a small sample at a Home Depot type store, you really can't get an idea of what it will look like. We went looking for a taupe/white granite, we absolutely didn't want anything dark. When we saw how many of the taupe slabs took on a pinkish "glow" in the large slabs and when we saw all the depth of color in this piece, we completely changed our minds. I'm so glad we went to a specialty granite and marble place rather than a "big box" store.

Some people want to have a perfect kitchen. Every inch has a vignette that matches beautifully. I like for mine to look nice, but I also use my kitchen. So, for accessories I choose things that I love. I wanted to use lots of whites, but also some 'beachy" things and a few favorite pieces. Above you see my grandmother's cookie jar, canisters with starfish my husband bought me, favorite cookbooks, a vintage Hall Pottery teapot that I've had for decades and a new TJ Maxx white tray ready for serving coffee.

A Corian cutting board, my grandmother's crock bowl, a pottery trivet from a vacation, my crafted pineapple and favorite basket are on the other side of the stove.

The frig...love it!

Simple brushed nickel pulls to match all the stainless.

My dad gave me this cutting board and clock for Christmas...it reminds me of my "other home" in Florida where he is and where my daughter is. The paper towel holder isn't very classy, but at least it is stainless and matches everything else!

If I had selected the cabinets (we kept the ones that came with the house and simply added a fresh coat of varnish) I wouldn't have added these shelves. But, since they here, I filled them with new and old white pitchers. The top is the antique pitcher my mom gave me years ago, next is a teapot I've had for many years, the smaller pitcher was from TJ Maxx a few months ago and the bottom pitcher was part of my CSN purchase that I won from bj @ sweet nothings.

A simple white bowl (TJ Maxx clearance-$7.50) full of lemons sits on the counter. The tops of the cabinets have a few vintage pieces and some newer things with a beach theme. I like the mix of old and new.

I'm sure we will be "tweaking" things as we go along. We've about decided to put the bead board on the end of the counter even though we would be covering the wood that matches the cabinets. We think it might make for a more completed look. Any opinions?

I am very pleased with the way things turned out. It really did change the look of my kitchen entirely. I had nice cabinets and the kitchen had "good bones" but the countertop had been bothering me from the minute we moved in. It just wasn't me. Now, my kitchen fits.
I am joining several parties this week.

The Spool Cabinet Found a Home

You may remember that we brought home this unique spool cabinet from my in-laws home a few weeks ago. I wasn't sure where we were going to put it, but it was such a treasure to them that I knew we had to find a home for it in our home.

It was actually easier than I expected to find a place for it. We have an antique mirror that hangs in our entry. It is a favorite piece of ours and used to hang over our fireplace (when we had one). The wood matched beautifully.

I wasn't certain what to put on the spool cabinet. The hinged top makes it difficult to balance things on it. I decided to wrap a book in some vintage sheet music to help balance the small lamp. I was thrilled to find "mother-in-law" music, since this piece of furniture was her favorite. The beaded flowers were my mom's and I liked the spring touch and the hint of color.

I decided I wanted vintage buttons for a spool cabinet. I bought 5 pounds of them on Ebay. I don't sew at all. I had no idea how many buttons I was buying. Let's just say that I filled the jar and a large ziploc bag. If you have very easy craft ideas for me to use some of the buttons, please link them in the comments. I have lots of buttons! I was happy with how they look in the jar.

The buttons after I emptied the box
they came in and before washing them.

I wanted to share the detailing on the mirror. It is so heavy that we are always terrified it will fall and kill someone. We love the unique edging on the mirror. We didn't have to touch this piece. We bought it at an auction 25 years ago.
