And Now...The Rest of The Story

This is one of those times that I really wish I could write like my friend Jenny Matlock. I just know that if she were to write this you would be rolling on the floor laughing by the time you were done reading. As it is, I have a feeling you may chuckle, but you will probably just feel sorry for me.

You know how I mentioned earlier this week that I killed my modem? I just didn’t tell you how I did it. I had to have a conversation with my daughter (who still loves me) before I made a full public disclosure. Monday started out as a normal day. I decided to make some changes in my daughter’s room. So, first I decided to dust the 2 small shelves which held her favorite things. I moved a special snow globe to the desk below the shelves to get it out of the way and I made a mental note not to touch her metal tree which holds her Christopher Radko ornament collection (did you just get a chill). As I moved something on the shelf, it barely touched the base of the Radko tree. The tree fell onto the desk, breaking the snow globe into my modem and sending a rainbow of Radko glass shards all over the room. I did what any mature woman would do at that point. I started wailing like a baby, ran from the room, called my husband and went to bed.

We have been buying her Radko ornaments for 9 years. We try to find one that has a connection to something special in our family for the year. In that moment, I thought we’d lost them all. When my husband got here and we actually braved the room, we found we had only lost 3 of them. Her first was very special, it was the 9/11 ornament. I was able to find one on Ebay and it is ordered.

Our second lost ornament was from the year she was obsessed with VW Bugs. She just knew she was going to buy one, so we found a turquoise Radko Love Bug for her. I couldn’t find another turquoise one, but I did find a purple one on Ebay and it arrived yesterday.

The third broken Radko I can’t find anywhere. It is a Limited Edition Mickey Mouse from 2005. There were only 750 made and obviously no one is selling theirs yet. He is intact but he lost his nose. It makes me sick, but if we are only out one of them…we are all okay that it is this one. I haven’t been able to find a replacement snow globe either, but I’ll keep looking.

My crime didn’t go unpunished. When my new modem arrived on Wednesday, I plugged it in and called my internet provider to activate it. He had me plug the Ethernet cord from the modem into my laptop (Dell Inspiron 1525) so he could secure the connection. My computer crashed immediately. After spending 2 hours yesterday on the phone with some guy in India (for only $59 since my 2 year old computer was out of warranty) it was determined that the hard drive crashed. They would try to help me get my data off the hard drive for another $210 if I wanted them to, I hung up. I packed up the computer and headed to my local computer shop. They are going to pull the info off hopefully, for $40. The tech and I made a deal and he bought my computer for $100. He also informed me that it is not at all uncommon for the Dell Inspiron computers to have a hard drive crash…hmm, now they tell me.

I am now the proud owner of a Toshiba Satellite with Windows 7 instead of the Vista I’m used to. The keyboard feels strange, but I’ll get used to it. It has a 17" screen, love that!

Did I mention that I also broke a tooth this week and had to go to the dentist? Oh, and Tuesday I woke up with a pulled a muscle in my neck and have been on the heating pad all week. You know you are getting old when you injure yourself sleeping.

Thank goodness it is the weekend! I need a break!

You did a great job with the story. I was laughing and at the same time feeling sorry about the collectibles. I'm glad you were able to find 2 or the 3. I suppose the moral of the story is forget about dusting. Next time as you walk by just blow the dust off. Also congrats on the new laptop and hard drives crash all the time regardless of the manufacturer. Been there, done that!!! Have a great day. Jude

You did a good job telling about your mishaps and computer problems. I think we all have had weeks like that - I know I have (way to many).
I had a house full over the weekend, and different ones using both of my computers - now they both have developed some "quirks". I need to research and find out what settings got changed, etc.
Hope you have a great weekend.

Good luck getting your data retrieved! We had tons of picture on an external hard drive that got bumped - they wanted $1,800 to retrieve the data - needless to say, we will be taking lots of pictures to replace the ones we lost!!!

Hope your day (and computer issues) go away soon!

Glad you were able to replace those ornaments....it's such a neat idea.

You have been through the mill this week, Sue! Isn't it odd that when the computer goes on the blink, it's never easy?

I'm so sorry about the ornament collection but you did do a great job telling the story, I had to smile!

Sue, what can a person say about your post...I ABSOLUTELY HATE BREAKING THINGS.....there is such a feeling of loss and many times the things are irreplaceable! Sorry about your computer too! Joni

Hi Sue, you poor dear...what a week you have had. I'm so sorry about all the problems but your story was certainly entertaining and well written.

You hang in there...I'm sure things will get better.

Hugs, Barb ♥

Oh Sue. Man, it is really finding you lately.

My husband and I used to say we "needed a bigger plate" when troubles piled up. We graduated that saying to "platter" for the past few months now.

But I'm thinking you might need to use "serving cart" for what's going on with you!

Sending a hug and a wish that sunny days are going to find you soon.

PS. I put that ornament on my "watch for" at garage sale lists for you. I'll keep my eyeballs peeled like grapes for one. (that's what my Grands say!) ha!

Oh no! Sosorry about all your computer problems, Sue, and breaking some of your daughter's ornament collection. My desktop harddrivecrashed over a month ago too but I had a 5 yr. extended warranty and they could not fix it so I got a replacement. I have Windows 7 now too and it takes some getting used to. Hope everything's back to normal in your household now....Christine

HI SUE, YES YOU HAVE HAD QUITE THE WEEK!! SORRY ABOUT ALL THE BROKEN ORNAMENTS, I DID THE SAME THING WITH MY CHILDREN AS THE WERE GROWING UP, I LET THEM CHOOSE A CHRISTMAS ORNAMENT EVERY YEAR OR I BOUGHT ONE THAT RELATED TO SOMETHING THEY WERE DOING OR WERE INTO AT THE TIME. Hi Sue! I'm visiting via Jenny's blog! I just couldn't resist what you said in your comment. See, it DID work! And you were just as interesting and funny as Jenny, too! Really! Jenny's my pal, so I know she wouldn't mind me saying that, either. You turned a sad, frustrating situation into something quite humorous! This was my absolute favorite line and I laughed out loud: "You know you are getting old when you injure yourself sleeping."
Hilarious!! And I know what you mean!! Hope you have a wonderful weekend!!

I have never heard of those ornaments--Oh, so glad they were not ALL distroyed--It must have been hard and sad for your daughter!

Sounds like you had one expensive week! Don't feel bad about the pulled muscle. My daughter , who is not old, does this often!

Gee, I have a Dell inspiron only a 1505--sure hope mine does not crash! I got help one time from their Indian phone number and they told me wrong stuff.

Well hope the rest of your month (ie today) is fine.

Hi Sue!
Oh the love bug ornament is AWESOME~
So sorry they broke...but thank goodness for ebay... so much to be said about that!
love it!

I wonder if someone who makes these kind of blown glass ornaments can fix Mickey? Maybe you'll come across someone at a craft fair or even a store selling local artists' things around the holidays...

so glad you're back online!
Hope the dentist was kind~

wishing you a restful weekend, Sue!

Oh my, I'm sorry to hear about all the trouble behind your mishap. I sure hope you'll love the new computer. My Dell Inspiron was falling apart little by little, but it has been through three books, a couple of viruses, a fall and more:)

Oh, I forgot to add that I am now using my husband's new acer. At first it was only for his use, but then we had Internet issues, and this was the only computer that could get on. Now, it seems I have taken over:)

Oh Sue, I'm so sorry about your week! If you only knew allll the stuff I've broken over the years. I can't even mention some things because they still bother me. I think you've had all your badluck for years in one week so it should be smooth sailing from here out!

As I said earlier, perhaps all of this was the result of the full moon? :-) For so much to go wrong, just have to blame the moon! I'm glad that things are looking up my friend. That's an awful lot for 1 week.

I've had Windows 7 for about a year now; my son works for a major computer company and updates my computer, etc. He is amazing!

Hope that today is restful and relaxing for you ~ you so deserve it!

Sue, so sorry about your ornaments and your bad week. I had a bad technical week a few months back and everything I did felt like I was traveling way up a hill in low gear! It will pass. Glad your lovin your new computer. It is always nice to update. On snapping pictures at Ghirardelli, I guess I am just fast on the pic taking. I don't think for July WDW was as busy this year as we have seen it in the past. We go our hotel at 25% off, that was the first clue. Thanks for stopping by.

Oh, Sue! What a time you've had with this. I know how you feel. Do you know that I was decorating the CHristmas tree years ago, put the last ornament on, and the tree came down on top of me??? I was trapped under it (I cushioned the fall for the most part), and I had the phone with me. SO I called Mr. Magpie, and he came home and got the tree off of me. LOL! I lost a few special ornaments, too, but BOY, was I glad to get that tree off of me! Each year we tie down the tree. Doesn't matter what size. It is tied down. ;-)

If I see Mickey, I will let you know.

XO,

Sheila :-)

G'eve Sue ~ What a story, love Radko ornies. I'd have been short of distraught, too. There was a full moon this week ... :)

Oh Sue
I hope I am not too late.. You know you can easily remove that harddrive yourself and buy a simple harddrive case which will connect the drive to your new computer via usb cable.. probably cost you $20!! I have done this myself twice now!! once with an old laptop and once with a desktop that bit the dust!! I also NEVER throw or giveaway my harddrives for security reasons.. If you are going to throw them.. smash them with a hammer first!

Hope i haven't made it worse!! but it is at least worth knowing for the future.. bloody techo's make me nuts [says the IT analyst.. hahaha]

Hope you are well.. my internet sucks in the new place.. need to change providers and get back into full swing!! Take care. xxx Julie

Oh geez - sounds like your own little nightmare! I feel your computer pain. I crashed my iPhone and my computer together this weekend. Thankfully, after four hours of tears, I was able to restore both. Ah, technology.

Hope you had a much better week :)
