Down on the Farm

I'm not a farm girl. In fact, just thinking about me and farm work in the same thought, would make you laugh if you knew me! I don't like to be hot or dirty. I don't like bugs, snakes or chickens (unless they happen to be very tiny and soft). However, today my tablescape is in honor of all the farmers who are willing to work so hard to put food on our tables.

I haven't been doing many tablescapes this summer. I finally decided that if I went to my dish room and tried to put it back into some kind of order, maybe I would be more inspired. We brought in quite a bit of "stuff" from the in-law's house. Some we wanted, some were things that are old family items that we need to keep. They all ended up in my dish room and I couldn't see the table or the floor. This morning I cleaned the room and pulled out several sets of dishes that will be going into my garage sale next month. The set I used today is one I am going to sell, so I thought I'd use it one last time.

I decided a farm table needed to have a vintage look to it. The centerpiece is an old wooden bowl lined with a vintage dish towel. I added a few fresh veggies and look how pretty it is! Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should do with that fresh okra? Our local Amish stand had it for sale and they talked me into it!

The plates are marked Fresh Vegetables by Tabletops Unlimited.

A vintage tablecloth of my mother's has that 50's kitchen look to it.
I love the stitching around the hem.

I picked a few gladioli (I looked it up) from the yard.

They are in an antique milk bottle from what was once a local dairy.
I love the fact that we even have the lid for the bottle.

A little tin windup bird seems to work with this table.

Of course we need a pitcher full of milk...

...and a vintage dish to hold our corn.

I am very late today in joining Susan @ Between Naps on the Porch for Tablescape Thursday. I am still dragging my heels around here trying to find inspiration and ideas to write about and time to visit each of you. I thank each of you for continuing to visit and read the crazy things I come up with!

  2. A very pretty table in honor of the farmers. Your wooden bowl looks like mine. :) No - I am not a farm girl either. :D Sorry - No help on the okra. I have not cooked it in many years, but do order it on a rare occasion when eating out, if can't find something else I like better. I can handle it better if just a little in a soup or gumbo.
    Enjoy your evening.

  5. Sue, always a pleasure stopping by your blog. This is a lovely table and those dishes, too bad they would have to be shipped, I love them! I am not a fan of okra, too slimy, it can be battered and fried or put in a shrimp gumbo. I guess. xo

  6. Your tablescapes are always so beautiful. Thanks for your kind words. I did reply back on the blog, but don't know if it went to your e-mail or not, I've installed a new program where I can reply to comments. I'm so sorry for your recent losses. I lost my dad in 05 so I truly understand.

Cute cute dishes..Now, I am wanting to do a farm tablescape and I don't have much in the FARM way. Gonna look around and see what I can come up with. I have been doing tablescapes so long, I am about to get burned out on them..but when something different and fresh, like yours, comes along, it makes me want to do another one, too. Guess it's the challenge that inspires.
Thanks, dear one, for the inspiration..I LUV how us bloggers just keep spurring each other on, don't you?

  11. Neat! It all looks like my aunt's or grandmother's table. Of course, here in the south, fried okra is a staple. It has to be done with a corn meal batter and crisply fried for me. I cannot eat it boiled...no way.

Hope you find a way to use it!

  14. Great table! I love the vintage corn holders and the sweet table cloth. That little wind-up birdie looks adorable next to the milk bottle and its cap. That is really cool that you have the cap, too!

Too bad I don't live nearby...I'd be right at your yard sale looking at the dishes for sale!

  17. Hi Sue!
Blogging this summer has been kind of slow for me! I'm so glad to visit you this morning!
Your post is making me smile ~ I laugh, too when I think of how I've always wanted a horse, but hated cleaning out the guinea pig cages when my kids were young! Seriously! I used to tell the kids that a horse stall is like a giant guinea pig cage!
Your farm table scape is great! The glads are one of my summer favorites. I plant them every year in honor of my mother. When we were young, she'd say, "Go to the farmer's market and pick up a dozen of gladiolas, here's a dollar." Maybe it was .50. Now it's that much for a stem!
I hope you've had a lovely summer, Sue!
Two more weeks left before school starts! Wow, that was fast!
    *Happy Sunday*

  18. Oh, this is a great table! Everything works so well together! I know what you mean about not being a farm girl. My idea of being outdoorsy is shopping in an open air center rather than the mall!!! You brought the country straight into your dining room with this cool setting, though! Great job!
