Desk Makeover-Met Monday

My dad left yesterday to head back to Florida. I did want to show you one of his projects while he was at my house. You may remember the $15 garage sale desk that I posted a few days ago. It had good "bones" but was certainly dated. My dad had never done a Shabby project, but I think he did a great job.

He started by removing the wooded knobs and sanding the entire desk. Next came 3 coats of white paint.

It went a bit against his instincts to then sand off some spots in the paint, but he did it. A clear glaze was applied after the rough spots were added.

I ordered new glass knobs from Anthropologie. My four knobs with shipping cost twice as much as the desk, but they really gave it the look I wanted. The desk is in my daughter's room, which is gradually becoming my office since she is so rarely home.

The knobs are a sea glass color (mint)
and perfect with the coverlet for the daybed.

I also wanted to share my new to me bookends. Dad and I went to an area furniture store for their tent sale on Friday. The birds had come unglued from the birdbaths, so I got these for $1. A drop of glue and they are perfect for the corner of my "new" desk. My real bargain (the best I've ever gotten) I will post tomorrow...stay tuned!

I am linking today with Susan @ Between Naps on the Porch
for Met Monday. There are so many great projects listed each week.
I only wish I had time to read them all! Make sure you visit her!

I'm also joining Mary @ Little Red House for Mosaic Monday.
I hope you will pop in and say hello to her!

  2. Your Dad di8d a great job on the desk. I really like the knobs. You got a great deal on the bookends.
There is an Anthropologie not far from me, but I have yet to have bought anything there. Everything I took a second look, was just to high - at last I felt it was.
    Have a great week.

  6. What a wonderful makeover...it is very hard for a man to paint wood and sand some off, guess it must be a male thing! The sea green knobs really add that little bit of color needed on a white piece. Thanks for sharing.

  7. Sue,
You dad did such a great job on your new desk! The knobs add such a great touch. I can remember my Nona gasping in horror at the mere thought of painting a piece of funiture! I can imagine your father felt the same way about sanding what he just painted!

  8. That desk makeover is brilliant, it would work perfectly as a dressing table as well as the desk you are currently using it as.

You mentioned you didn't know there were scholarships for rodeo...our son went all thru college on a rodeo scholarship. 2 years at a junior college and 2 years here at Texas Tech. His wife did the same. Son was a bull rider..she was a roper and barrel racer. :))

  18. Hi Sue
What a great job your dad did on that desk.. can you send him over here.. I have a huge kitchen dresser that needs a workover... maybe he could do his magic it on it.!!! i laughed about against his instincts to 'shabby' it up.. I imagine my dad would have been the same.. he was a painter by trade..

Sorry for the lack of visits.. I've had no internet this past week or so... Have a lovely week.... and once again beautiful desk!!! xxx Julie

  19. I was headed out down south about 4 hours to my friends condo to do just this kind of project but traffic and family ended up having us turn around. Good thing, she ended up having gall bladder problems that night. I am glad you mentioned the 3 coats of paint. I probably wouldn't have done that. It looks fabulous and the knobs are worth it.
