Tablescape Thursday-My Mother's Table...Last Day For Giveaway!

As most of you know, my mother passed away last month and I'm in Florida with my dad. We are going through her things, deciding what he will keep, what my sister and I will now have and what we will be donating. I finally got into her "dish room" the past two days. I thought it would be nice to do a tablescape on her table.

My parent’s dining room and living room are an open space. I can’t show you the entire room, because I still have several card tables set up with things for my sister to go through when she gets here on Saturday. The table is marble based. Most of my parent’s home is done in white, with pops of coral and aqua.

The china I used is Carlton by Castleton China. Both my grandmother and my mother had a set. My sister and I will both be taking it home with us. The sterling flatware also belonged to my maternal grandmother. It is Alvin Sterling, French Scroll. My mother gave it to me when I got married, but I never wanted it…until now. I guess I finally grew up (or starting blogging). It will also be going home with me. My sister will have my mother’s sterling flatware to go with her china.

The crystal ice tea glasses are Fostoria Buttercup. Once again a pattern that my grandmother, mother and I all had. Mom had recently given my sister part of hers and now we will be filling out her set.

We gave my parents the Waterford shell for Christmas several years ago.

The centerpiece is a bowl my mom got last year at HomeGoods. It was sitting on her table when I got here and I still liked the look even after I added the runner to the table.

The little Lladro angel is very special to me and it was to my mom. I bought it for her when I was about 13, with my own money. It wasn’t for an occasion, it was “just because” and she always really loved it. I thought it needed to come out of the breakfront and watch over the table.

I didn’t use real candles because with my luck I would burn the place down. I actually broke the lid to a vintage Lenox sugar bowl today and I still feel terrible about it.

Don’t forget to sign up for my GIVEAWAY. Click here to sign up. I will count everyone who signs up before midnight EST. I’ll announce the winner just as soon as possible.

  4. Beautiful table. You'll always have the memories associated with these treasures that your Mom has left for you. I chuckled at your comment about your Mom giving you the flatware and you did not want it at the time...isn't it funny how stupid we are when we are young. Hang in there and God bless.

  8. It's wonderful that you have such a deep appreciation for your mother's and grandmother's beautiful things. I know it's a very difficult time for you and a thing like breaking a sugar bowl lid can take on further intensity than it normally might. Perhaps you can find a replacement on eBay (might be worth checking from time to time).

Hope your dad's doing OK. He's fortunate to have you and your sister there to help him through this process.

    Warmest regards,
    Bill

  9. What a wonderful post! A table full of sweet memories! We've just been through a similar process after my mother-in-law passed away and my father-in-law downsized. I so enjoy using the beautiful things they loved and remembering my mother-in-law each time I do.

  11. Sue, what a beautiful table, and I think it is wonderful that you are going to have some of your mother's beautiful things to remember both her and your grandmother by. This is a lovely home and a lovely tablescape. And your little angel is so sweet. I think that was the perfect touch to this beautiful tablescape.

Hope you are enjoying being with your father and that all of you are doing well. Thinking of you...

    XO,

  15. As someone who didn't inherit anything my heart is with you setting that table. It's a beautiful tribute. I have a set of Castleton that I really like, and I have some Fostoria that I've been collecting for a while. Don't worry too much about the lid, it WILL show when you least expect it.

  18. Sue, when I was here before, your blog background was black with purple writing...and I couldn't read the words. Now, everything is normal on here.
This was the reason I didn't know what was going on. :(

  22. Hello sis and I am so happy to be your new sister. I ask you to forgive me for pasting the same message on all of the sorority sisters bloggys as I am never a “cut and paster” but with the recent death of my son, I am overwhelmed right now and just wanted everyone of my new sisters to know I am following you and hope I will soon be able to truly visit you so we will get to know each other as a sister should. Thanks for visiting me. Mollye

ps I just read that you lost your dear mom and I will pray for peace to return to you. XXMollye

  26. Such a soft and pretty setting. The angel is the perfect touch. We just cleaned out and sold my father-in-laws house. We've thrown away, sold, and brought home a ton of stuff. There are things I sure wish I knew the story behind....some mysteries for sure. Loved your Mother's dishes.
